Backyard visitor

This bird appeared in my backyard yesterday, flew around a bit near the bird feeder, and then settled on the fence just long enough to snap a couple pictures. I know it's a bird of prey of some kind (falcon, perhaps?) but a very unusual sight here.

Since the temperatures here are finally reasonable, we went for a little hike today out at a local nature preserve. I particularly loved the sun shining through all the young trees with leaves in marcescence (mostly beech and oak at this particular location), and the subtle colors of winter.
