Cormorant and Green Heron

We first spotted these green heron about 6 years ago, but never saw them on our end of the lake. Last week there were two of them. Maybe newly grown chicks?

Near them was another bird we hadn't seen before which someone told me was a cormorant. We saw it for two days in a row and then it was gone. Do these migrate?

Do you know about Cornell University's bird app called Merlin? Very user friendly it will help you ID almost any bird, will tell you about it and give links to further info. You can even record birdsong and get instant ID. You can check out the main web page at: https://www.birds.cornell.edu/home/ or look in the App store for Merlin.

re: Cormorants, yes, they migrate lots. I forget/don't know where you are, but double crested cormorants (which that looks like, maybe) tend to go southish for the winter (so as to avoid ice and so on), to the Gulf states if you're in the US.

Also, nice green heron picture there. They're so weird.

We get cormorants in the UK and it certainly looks like one. They do migrate but their migration patterns are odd.
