In December I went for a walk on the Malvern Hills and spotted a midwinter fungus, probably a Clitocybe.

At one point I seemed to have strayed into Middle Earth and saw what appeared to be HUGE fantastical gates in the forest of Broceliande below.

I went for a walk in Powys in Wales.

Slwch Tump with anthills, gorse flowers, and a view to Pen y Fan (the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, and Southern Britain, at a mere 886m). St Eluned was reputedly beheaded here in the 5th century.

Taken earlier this week in my garden, Canberra, Australia. Not sure of the exact identification.
In case anybody is a bit insect-phobic, photos under the cut.

I've seen all of these butterflies in the last couple of weeks but some of the photos are from last year. The ones that got away were several speckled wood butterflies, which are brown with yellow spot markings (link to google image search results).

At tai chi, which my group practice outside, we were outnumbered by peacock butterflies (Inachis io), who flew around us and occasionally perched on us, so when we'd finished I grabbed my camera and chased them through the buddleia. The one I capped, probably a male, is this year's adult but has already faded from its brightest red and metallic blue. Adult wingspan is about 6.5 to 7cm (so the images on this page are about lifesize). The larvae/caterpillars are generally black and always spiky. More details and images here @ ukbutterflies.

While I was out for a walk, I recently saw a lone magpie (Eurasian magpie, pica pica) manage to successfully "mob" and drive away a much larger buzzard (common buzzard, buteo buteo) from the magpie's breeding territory: 5 small photos at my journal. Enjoy!

(With apologies to the handful of com members who've already seen this elsewhere.)

Poof

Poof (Blue Milkweed), 11 x 6", watercolor and pastel on paper

I have these pods in my little home studio, where they are currently shedding pearly fluffy seeds all over my palette and I don't even care. I pick them as closed green pods in September/early October, and keep them and they split open gleefully in the dead of winter.

Oh, and a community question. If a tag doesn't exist for something I post, am I supposed to just add the tag myself? In this case, "seeds," "plants," "weeds" or "botanical" would fit but I don't see any of those.

Some more photos from Tulip Top Gardens (Australia) on the 3 Oct 2010. I have to say that I'm hoping to be able to go back there next year.

It's spring here in Australia (I'm a Sydney-sider) and I visited Canberra last weekend for the Southern Hemisphere's biggest flower festival, Floriade. While I was there, I also visited Tulip Top Gardens (which is open for spring the same time as Floriade) which is 15 mins out from Canberra, back in NSW. The weather wasn't great, but we did get a little bit of blue sky and sunshine in amongst the cloud covered skies and rain and the garden was absolutely beautiful. Tulips, pansies, blossoms galore.

(I post my photos at [community profile] skylark_photos and for anybody who's interested in art made from the photos (icons, wallpapers--will be coming up for these photos later this month, headers) I post that at [community profile] skylark_art.)
