It's been very cold here the past few days and the lake froze over on Wednesday. Friday morning it was covered in the nonpareil pieces of ice look, which I really like because it makes the lake sparkle. You can see glints of this in the top photo but it's brighter than it looks. ( Read more... )

You can't see that many of them in the photos but there was a huge flock of birds swirling around the sky yesterday morning when I went on a walk. I was able to get some of them on a video which also captured the sound -- my partner said it seemed like a scene from The Birds. There was a pretty color on the horizon, even if it was already 9 AM by then. ( Read more... )

We have a goose couple hanging around the lake with a trio of goslings. I saw them again this morning wandering around the sidewalk with their parents. ( Read more... )

The above photo is unfortunately the only one from when my SO witnessed a goose slapdown last weekend. While out for a walk he noticed a group of 5 geese across the street. Two were fighting viciously while 3 stood around. Then the geese flew across the street to his side, so low that they were nearly hit by a car. ( Read more... )

A recent sunset was SO pink I think it overloaded our camera. It was definitely very very colorful but even so these pics make it technicolored. The clouds don't even look like clouds but blue spots. ( Read more... )

Although as of yesterday the temperatures have been warming to a more moderate cold, for the past 10 days it's been very cold. The birds gathered on our balcony in even greater numbers, not just seeking food since the snow was sticking to the ground this time, but for shelter from the wind. I loved the pattern that all the bird feet made in the snow. ( Read more... )

So this might take a little imagination, but when I saw this cloud formation last night and went out to take pictures it struck me as a dragon's head by the trees with smoke coming off its body. And the "smoke" in the picture below just looked so impressionistic, like smears of paint on a canvas.

Every once in a while, we have what I call "cloud mountains", which is clouds which seem to rise out of the ground with a clear sky above. When they're around at sunset they create a colored wall. ( Read more... )

We've noticed that our sunsets are shifting to the left instead of directly ahead, which is the common view from our balcony. The other day this was unfortunate because it put the different layers of color largely behind trees. But still something to appreciate. ( Read more... )
