We spotted a bird out by the lake which seems to be a common sandpiper. I've run across a nest of eggs before but haven't seen one of these in our neighborhood.
I'm wondering if it had a nest nearby. I've seen one before built on the ground on some rocks and we do have quite a few rockpiles close to nearby bushes.
They're fairly small. I wasn't that close but given its size compared to the retaining wall I'd say it was smaller than a crow but larger than a robin?
I think this is the bird I see in my area. It would make sense; I live near a few lakes. With the way it runs across the street, though, I always just call it a roadrunner, but I know it's not. (Very wrong region.)
It's funny you should mention this because birds seem to have two kinds of movement. Some, as you said, move like road runners. The others waddle. We thought the same when we saw a pheasant for the first time two years ago -- and wow, it moved fast!
