We spotted a bird out by the lake which seems to be a common sandpiper. I've run across a nest of eggs before but haven't seen one of these in our neighborhood.
It's funny you should mention this because birds seem to have two kinds of movement. Some, as you said, move like road runners. The others waddle. We thought the same when we saw a pheasant for the first time two years ago -- and wow, it moved fast!
